Why trends come back?

“Oh! When I was young I used to wear does suits!” We have all heard that from our mums, or Grandmas. But, have you ever thought why trends come back?

You may don´t believe it, but the same way in which life has a cycle, so does clothing. However, what determines the cycle of fashion?

When something 1) first comes out, it may be kind of extravagant, and only the courageous wear it. However, it becomes more and more popular 2), until the moment in which it becomes common. 3) The demand is maintained in this situation until loads of people have it, it lacks originality and the demand declines 4). Giving place to the next trend.

However, there is another way in which clothing changes. I will explain it through the example of skirts. First, there were long-skirts. During the years they have become shorter and shorter, until we have the mini-skirt. Once they cannot be shorter, we get back to the long-skirt trend. The same happens with trousers, and we have had slim-line pants, boyfriend, crop jeans, or bell trousers….

Many years away this varies where determined by the designers whose collections were exposed along the catwalks, such as the one of Coco Chanel, a pioneer of fashion. I would like to point out one of her many foresights. In an époque in which hats were extremely exaggerated, she said that they were going to be unfashionable. Why? Because designers weren’t capable of adding more complements and more volume to the hats. And as a saturation of it, her famous and simple conotier became so successful.

Anyway, nowadays, the foreknowledge’s is done by the coolhunters, which in fact, do their research in blogs, or in the street. Why? As a cause of the Internet. The increasing importance of the e-commerce or the influencers, has derived in the fast fashion. Short trends subdued to continuous changes. However, this has caused too, a coexistence of different trends in time. People is not capable to change as fast as retailers do, so while some wear long skirts, other have the minis, or both.

So, as an advice, don´t throw anything, because perhaps in less than a year, it is the new in, once again!
